The common name you give is one I"ve heard used for dog toothed violet.

I am trying to identify groundcover that runs wild in the Northeast. I have heard it called "Speckled Trout" or "Trout Plant". It is about 6" tall, has fuzzy...almost prickly leaves. The foliage is dark green with white spots...and the pant has pink and white blossoms in early summer...
